Wanted by a Federal Court in Texas for Cocaine and Meth: DEA Tip Leads Mexican Agents to ‘El Trébol’ Near Querétaro’s Airport

Mexican federal agents have arrested Erick Eduardo Ríos Estrada, alias “El Trébol,” near the Querétaro International Airport in central Mexico. A U.S. federal court in the Southern District of Texas wants him extradited, Mexico’s Security Cabinet said on Oct. 16, 2026. According to the Security Cabinet’s statement, as reported by El Universal, Vanguardia, Milenio and Noroeste, he is accused of belonging to a “transnational criminal cell” that trafficked cocaine and methamphetamine from Mexico into the United States. The case started with information shared by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

How he was found
El Universal and Vanguardia report that the DEA’s information placed Ríos Estrada in the city of Querétaro. Agents then watched him from fixed and moving positions and identified the vehicles he used. The arrest was made near the airport by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), through its Criminal Investigation Agency and Interpol Mexico unit (AIC-INTERPOL), in coordination with the Security and Citizen Protection Ministry (SSPC). Both outlets say he also goes by “Chilangolandia.” The outlets did not give the time of the arrest.
What the U.S. case is about
Mexican authorities served him with an arrest warrant for extradition. The outlets report that the Texas court wants him on charges described in Mexico as criminal association and crimes against health, the Mexican legal term for drug offenses. The Southern District of Texas covers Houston and border cities including Laredo, McAllen and Brownsville. Mexican officials did not say which division brought the case.
Noroeste notes that the Security Cabinet did not name the criminal organization he allegedly worked for, his role in it, or how long he was active. No outlet tied him to a specific cartel. “This arrest weakens the operational structure of a transnational criminal organization,” the Security Cabinet said, according to Vanguardia and Milenio.

What happens next
He was read his rights and placed at the disposal of federal prosecutors, who will determine his legal status while the extradition request moves forward. Any transfer to the United States would follow the legal procedures between the two countries. Ríos Estrada has not been convicted in either country and is presumed innocent.
