Missing Since Oct. 1 in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco): Las Palomas Homeowners Urge Sonora’s Governor to Step Up the Search for Their Manager, 45, and a Chihuahua Woman, 30

A homeowners’ association in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), the Sonora beach town popular with Arizona visitors, has asked Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo to step up the search for its maintenance and projects manager, Iván Alejandro Morales Cano, and for Diana Mariel Ruiz Amaya, 30. Both were last seen in Puerto Peñasco on Oct. 1, 2026, Diario del Yaqui and El Diario de Juárez reported. As of those reports, neither had been found.

What the Las Palomas letter asks
In a letter dated Oct. 7, Las Palomas Rocky Point HOA asked Durazo to put “all available human, technical and operational resources” into the search, according to Diario del Yaqui, which published the letter. It asked for close coordination between the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office, the state search commission and any federal authorities who can help, and for a steady line of communication with both families.
The association described Morales Cano, 45, as a dedicated worker and “a father, son, colleague and friend.” Citing a Sonora search bulletin, it said he was last seen Oct. 1 and that his whereabouts have been unknown since. A Sonora search commission bulletin, shown in Diario del Yaqui’s graphic, lists his age as 44. “Puerto Peñasco is our adopted home,” the letter says. “Today our priority is only one: that Iván Alejandro Morales Cano and Mariel Ruiz Amaya are found and return safely to their homes.”

The Chihuahua search bulletin
El Diario de Juárez reported Oct. 3 that Ruiz Amaya was born in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, and was formally reported missing that day. It cited a bulletin from the Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office. The bulletin says she was last seen in Puerto Peñasco on Oct. 1 and that what she was wearing is unknown. It lists a fire tattoo on her right forearm and a small horse silhouette on her left forearm. Tips go to 911 or the anonymous line 089.
What is not known
None of the reports reviewed say whether the two were together, what happened to them, or whether any suspect or criminal group is involved. Sonora authorities had not commented publicly in those reports. In an Oct. 8 opinion column, Dossier Político’s José F. Medina wrote that “something very serious is happening” with security in the tourist town. For travel conditions and recent incidents, see our Rocky Point safety page.
