Girl, 14, Stopped on a Bus Headed to Juárez at El Paso’s Bridge of the Americas: CBP Says the 34-Year-Old Mexican Man With Her May Have Cartel Ties

Federal officers stopped a 14-year-old girl from being taken across the Bridge of the Americas into Ciudad Juárez, across from El Paso, Texas, on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, and arrested the 34-year-old Mexican man traveling with her, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Port of El Paso said, as reported Oct. 14 by KVIA, KFOX14 and El Diario de El Paso. According to KVIA, CBP accused the man of having “ties to a Mexican cartel.” KFOX14 and El Diario reported the agency said he “could have” cartel ties, and no outlet reported any evidence or the name of a cartel.

A mother who didn’t know where her daughter was
CBP said the girl’s mother had reported she did not know where her daughter was and believed the girl was being taken to Mexico against her will, KVIA reported. The man was allegedly traveling with the teen on a bus headed toward Mexico; Norte Digital, citing CBP, described it as a commercial passenger bus. Officers with CBP’s El Paso Mobile Enforcement Team and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, who were running a joint operation at the bridge, stopped the pair before the girl was taken across, according to El Diario. Officials have not said where the girl is now or how the two knew each other.
The charge is child sexual abuse material, not kidnapping
Several outlets described the case as a foiled kidnapping, but the only federal charge reported is possession of child sexual abuse material. CBP’s graphic lists 18 U.S.C. § 2252(a)(4)(B): knowingly possessing, or accessing with intent to view, material showing a minor in sexually explicit conduct. KVIA reported that officials also issued an arrest warrant and a notice to appear, and that removal proceedings are pending. Norte Digital wrote that he faces attempted-kidnapping charges, but the other outlets and CBP’s own graphic do not mention such a charge. CBP has not said how the charge relates to the girl. The man has not been named, and he is presumed innocent.
The bridge is one of El Paso’s busiest crossings into Juárez. For more on cartel activity and safety there, see our Juárez–El Paso guide.
