Over a Loose Tooth: Sonora Prosecutors Say a U.S. Citizen, 30, Gunned Down a Nogales Dentist — Then Died Shooting at Agents Who Came to Arrest Him in Agua Prieta, Across From Douglas, Arizona

A 30-year-old U.S. citizen whom Sonora prosecutors blamed for shooting a dentist to death in Nogales, Sonora, was killed on Oct. 17, 2026, when he opened fire on agents who came to arrest him in Agua Prieta, the Mexican border city across from Douglas, Arizona. That is the account the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJES) gave El Imparcial and Aristegui Noticias. Prosecutors identified him only as Ernest “N,” also called Ernesto “N.” They say the motive was a complaint that the dentist had left him with a loose tooth after a procedure. He died without being tried or convicted.
The killing in Nogales
The victim, dentist Amed de Jesús Preciado Hernández, 42, was shot on Oct. 15 while in his vehicle outside his office in Nogales’ Kennedy neighborhood, El Imparcial reported. Infobae placed the attack in the parking lot of the Hospital Kalitea. According to the FGJES account reported by Aristegui, the suspect had stalked the dentist, surprised him in the parking lot and shot him several times as he begged for his life. Infobae said security-camera video of the attack later circulated online.
A day after the killing, AMIC chief Carlos Alberto Flores told reporters the crime stemmed from “a misunderstanding” over the victim’s professional work. He said investigators were already coordinating with U.S. authorities, Infobae reported. Prosecutors also said the suspect had a record with U.S. authorities. None of the reports we read gave his full name or his U.S. hometown.

The shootout in Agua Prieta
Agents of Sonora’s Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC), backed by municipal and state police, went to a home on Calle 19, between Avenidas 18 and 19, in the Ejidal 2 neighborhood to serve an arrest warrant. Prosecutors say they were met with gunfire. A bullet grazed an AMIC agent’s head and a municipal officer was wounded in the left leg. Both are out of danger, and an AMIC vehicle was hit, according to the FGJES statement reported by El Imparcial and Tribuna. Officers returned fire, and the man died at the scene despite first aid, prosecutors said.
What it means for border travelers
Officials have not tied the case to a cartel, and none of the reports we read did either. Prosecutors describe a personal dispute that ended in a killing, not organized-crime violence. For background on crossing at these two ports, see our Nogales safety guide and Agua Prieta–Douglas guide.
