Oaxaca Mayor ‘Quetu’ Arrested: Juchitán’s Miguel Sánchez Charged With Aggravated Extortion as Report Ties Him to CJNG’s ‘Los Cromo’ Wing
Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, the sitting mayor of Juchitán de Zaragoza in Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec, was arrested on Wednesday, September 23, alongside an alleged associate known as “La Parca,” Infobae México reported. Mexico’s federal security chief said both men faced arrest warrants for aggravated extortion and crimes against the security of the state.
What federal officials announced
According to Infobae (September 23, 2026), Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), said Sánchez was detained with Carlos Alberto “N,” alias “La Parca,” in an operation involving the Navy (Semar) and federal and state forces. Infobae reported that, according to investigators, the mayor is linked to a criminal group engaged in extortion of merchants and business owners, street-level drug dealing, human trafficking and homicides. Harfuch also said the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) froze resources and blocked accounts of people connected to the investigation, and that operations continue to dismantle the group “por completo.”
A second Infobae report the same day said the arrest took place in neighboring Ciudad Ixtepec, after the mayor, popularly known as “Quetu,” left a school cultural event. Sánchez, of the Morena party, won reelection for the 2025–2027 term.
Alleged ties to the CJNG
Citing information it obtained and investigators’ findings, Infobae reported that Sánchez maintains links to “Los Cromo,” described as the operational arm of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Investigators allege he gave the group political and economic cover from city hall, provided access to C2 surveillance cameras, warned it about state and federal security forces, oversaw extortion payments from businesses, bought weapons and controlled Los Cromo safe houses used to traffic migrants. “La Parca” is accused of running drug sales, extortion, killings and the transport and extortion of migrants through a network of motorcycle taxis. These are allegations; neither man has been convicted, and Infobae did not report a response from Sánchez or his defense.
Municipal police block roads
Security sources told Infobae that a group of Juchitán municipal police were blocking highway access points and exits from the town to prevent Sánchez from being transferred to a federal prison, though unofficial accounts said the blockades would not stop him from being brought before authorities. The number of officers involved was not known.
