159 Mexican Marines and 2 Drones Across From Texas: Mexico Says the 500 U.S. Troops Sent to the Rio Grande Valley After the Garceño Coast Guard Shooting Are ‘Mirror Operations’

Mexico’s Navy has 159 marines, 11 vehicles and two drones posted on the Tamaulipas side of the Rio Grande around Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas. In a joint statement on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, Mexico’s Navy (Semar) and Foreign Ministry (SRE) said the roughly 500 U.S. troops now arriving in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley are part of “mirror operations” (operaciones espejo) between the two countries. The U.S. deployment followed gunfire from Mexico at a U.S. Coast Guard boat near Garceño, Texas, on Sept. 26. Mexico says this is not a standoff.

What Mexico says it is doing
According to the statement as reported by EFE (via El Informador) and Uno TV, the Navy is running the deployment through its Matamoros Naval Sector under a strategy called Operación Sable. Each country patrols only its own territory. The stated aims are to strengthen border security, improve detection and protect each country’s sovereignty. The statement adds that any cooperation or information sharing “is carried out through the established institutional channels.” Uno TV reported that the Navy issued the clarification after reports suggested tension was rising over the Coast Guard attack.
The U.S. side: about 500 troops
U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Task Force-Southern Border announced Operation Unified Resolve on Oct. 2. In the Command’s words, it is “an ongoing effort to rapidly reinforce U.S. forces and federal partners” in the Rio Grande Valley under Operation Ardent Vanguard, The Texan reported. (Our Oct. 2 report, following an earlier description, called it “Unified Response”; the command’s own announcement says “Unified Resolve.”) Infobae, citing the joint statement and U.S. reports, said the shots came from the Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, side of the river and that neither government set an end date. The Coast Guard has said nobody was hurt and that the shooting remains under investigation. No arrests have been reported.
