‘I Have Nothing to Hide’: Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz Warned of Possible Arrest Over Carlos Manzo’s Phone as Michoacán Probes Alleged CJNG Money to His Sombrero Movement

Michoacán prosecutors are looking into whether Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) sent money to the Movimiento del Sombrero, the independent political movement founded by slain Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. Deputy Prosecutor Israel Vega Rodríguez confirmed the financial line of inquiry, Infobae reported on Sept. 30, 2026. His office has also warned Manzo’s widow, current Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz, that she could face measures up to arrest if she does not hand over her late husband’s phone. Quiroz answered: “I have nothing to hide.”

What prosecutors say
Manzo was shot dead on Nov. 1, 2025, during Uruapan’s Day of the Dead candle festival. According to Infobae, the state prosecutor’s office (FGE) is working with Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) on the money trail. “We are exhausting each and every line of investigation. That includes the financial part,” Vega Rodríguez said. Infobae reported that prosecutors have not established any direct link between CJNG money and the murder. Vega Rodríguez also said they currently have no evidence to investigate Quiroz herself over the killing.
On Sept. 28, three suspects were moved to the federal El Altiplano prison in the State of Mexico, Infobae reported. Two are alleged CJNG members: Alexis Jesús “N,” alias “El Brilloso,” who reportedly called Manzo his godfather, and his brother Christian Martín “N,” alias “El Vikingo.” The third is Alejandro “F,” alias “El Macas,” a former Manzo bodyguard.
The fight over the phone
Prosecutors want Manzo’s phones for forensic analysis, including his WhatsApp account, Infobae reported. Vega Rodríguez warned that refusing could lead to administrative arrest or an obstruction-of-justice case, UnoTV reported.
Quiroz told UnoTV that only one phone is involved and that it “has already been reviewed.” She says she will cooperate but wants the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to take over the case and do the analysis, because she questions the state investigation’s impartiality. “If they want to investigate me, let them do it according to the law,” she said. La Silla Rota reported that she accused state prosecutors of building narratives to persecute her politically. On Sept. 24, El Imparcial quoted her saying the federal government would handle the extraction and that “at no time have I refused.”

Reported Sept. 30, 2026, from the Mexican news reports listed above. The Narco Blog has not reviewed investigative files. The financial inquiry is an open line of investigation, not a finding: prosecutors say no direct link between CJNG money and the murder has been established, and no one in the Movimiento del Sombrero has been charged in connection with it. Quiroz has not been accused of any crime. Suspects held in the killing are presumed innocent.
