Gunmen Kill at Least 3, Wound 5 at Sunday Baseball Game in Guanajuato — Fourth Sports-Field Attack This Year Tied to Cartel Turf War
Gunmen opened fire on a Sunday crowd gathered at a baseball field in Duranes de Arriba, a small community in the municipality of Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, killing at least three people and wounding five others, state prosecutors confirmed. The attack, reported by El Informador, El Financiero and La Silla Rota, is the latest in a string of shootings at sports fields across Guanajuato that authorities have linked to an ongoing cartel turf war.
What happened
The shooting broke out around 4:30 p.m. on September 20, 2026, at a sports field wedged between the Gabriela Mistral elementary school and the Valle de Santiago–Pueblo Nuevo municipal border, El Informador reported. Armed men arrived in several vehicles carrying long guns and opened fire from multiple directions on families gathered for the Sunday outing, according to the outlet, which said victims screamed and scattered as the shooting continued. El Financiero, citing witnesses, reported that some of the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and pursued at least two men who tried to run before shooting them. Relatives drove the wounded to hospitals themselves rather than waiting for ambulances, El Informador said.
Confirmed toll and investigation
Guanajuato’s state Attorney General’s Office (FGEG) confirmed three men killed, according to La Silla Rota, which identified the victims only by partial names — Candelario, Reyes and José Luis — pending formal notification of relatives; five more men were wounded and taken to area hospitals. El Financiero’s initial report put the death toll at four. State agents recovered ballistic evidence indicating multiple calibers were fired, El Informador reported, and National Guard and state police units searched rural roads for the attackers, who fled the scene. Prosecutors are investigating the case as intentional homicide and are still working to determine who carried out the attack and why.
Part of a pattern in Guanajuato
No cartel has been named in connection with Sunday’s attack, and authorities have not stated a motive. But El Financiero noted the shooting fits a recurring pattern of gun attacks on sports fields across Guanajuato’s Bajío region, which it linked to a dispute between the Cártel de Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) over crystal meth production and distribution routes. The outlet cited three earlier attacks this year: a September 13 shooting at a soccer field in San Francisco del Rincón that killed one and wounded six; a January 27 massacre at a soccer field in Salamanca’s Loma de Flores neighborhood that killed 11 and wounded 12; and a June 20 attack in San Juan de Razos, also in Salamanca, that left five dead and two seriously injured.
