Grenades, Guns and 59,400 Drug Doses Found in Veracruz Safe House — No Arrests

Mexican state and federal forces searched a suspected drug safe house in Tempoal, in northern Veracruz, on September 20, recovering nearly 60,000 individually wrapped drug doses along with firearms, ammunition components and hand grenades, according to a September 21 report from Infobae and a same-day report from N+ (Nmas), both citing Veracruz’s state Fiscalía General (FGE). No one was arrested.
What was seized
The FGE said investigators found 69 packages containing a combined 59,400 sealed bags of what it described only as “prohibited substances,” without specifying which drug. Firearms, ballistic material and grenades were also recovered from the property, though the FGE did not disclose calibers, weapon types or the exact number of grenades, according to both outlets.
Where and how the search happened
The property sits on the Tempoal–Huejutla de Reyes highway, near the state line with Hidalgo. Multiple Veracruz outlets, including La Opinión and Veracruz en Red, reported that the search was carried out under a judicial warrant by the FGE’s investigative team of prosecutors, forensic experts and ministerial police, backed by soldiers from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA), the Guardia Nacional and the state’s Secretaría de Seguridad Pública. The property was secured and the seized material turned over for processing as evidence; none of the cited reports described anyone being taken into custody.
Whose territory, and what remains unproven
Infobae’s report noted that the surrounding Huasteca region of northern Veracruz is widely described in local reporting as contested ground for a group known as Grupo Sombra, also referred to as “La Mafia Veracruzana,” which the outlet said is linked to drug trafficking, fuel theft and extortion in Tempoal and neighboring municipalities. That context describes the region generally — the FGE’s own statement on this specific search did not attribute the safe house or its contents to Grupo Sombra or any other named organization, and no suspect has been identified or charged in connection with the find.
