10 Kilos of Fentanyl and 12 of Opium Gum in a Pickup’s Hidden Compartments: Mexican Troops Stop Nearly 100 Kilos of Drugs in San Luis Río Colorado, Across From San Luis, Arizona

Mexican soldiers and National Guard troops at a military checkpoint in rural San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, the border city across from San Luis, Arizona, and about 25 miles south of Yuma, detained two men and seized about 97.5 kilograms (roughly 215 pounds) of drugs, including 10 kilos of suspected fentanyl, hidden in their vehicle, Milenio reported late Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026. Mexico’s federal Security Cabinet announced the seizure Monday, Sept. 28.

What was in the truck

According to Milenio, troops assigned to the “Estación Doctor” military security post found 95 clear bags of a substance resembling methamphetamine (about 47.5 kilos), 28 packages of powder resembling cocaine (about 28 kilos), 10 rectangular packages resembling fentanyl (about 10 kilos) and 12 packages of a paste resembling opium gum (about 12 kilos). Milenio noted that the exact weight and nature of the substances will be set by forensic tests from Mexico’s federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

CorresponsalesMX, citing the federal account, reported that the Defense Ministry, the National Guard and the Security Ministry (SSPC) acted on intelligence work and “technological tools” that flagged a suspicious pickup, and that the drugs were stashed in hidden compartments built into several parts of the vehicle.

A second load in Tijuana

The Security Cabinet announced the Sonora bust together with a Tijuana seizure, for a combined 341 kilos, EFE reported via Infobae. In Tijuana, forces found 232 kilos of cocaine and 11.5 kilos of fentanyl hidden in a semitrailer. The reports do not make clear whether this is the same load a drug dog found at the Otay crossing on Sept. 25. The Security Cabinet described that one as about 249 kilos in 195 packages.

What is not known

Authorities did not name the two men, say where they were headed or tie them or the drugs to any cartel. They were handed to federal prosecutors (Ministerio Público), who will decide their legal situation. They have not been reported charged and are presumed innocent.
