677 Pounds of Meth and 30 Pounds of Fentanyl in 13 Storage Totes: Speeding Stop on U.S. 93 North of Las Vegas, Nevada, Leads to Federal Charges

A sheriff’s deputy stopped a speeding pickup on U.S. Highway 93 near Ash Springs, in rural Lincoln County, Nevada, north of Las Vegas, and found 13 storage totes holding about 677 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and 30 pounds of suspected fentanyl, federal prosecutors said Oct. 14, 2026. The driver, Francisco Joel Garcia Farias, 26, is charged in a federal criminal complaint in Las Vegas with possessing both drugs with intent to distribute.

A K-9 alert and 200 packages
According to the complaint as described by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled the truck over on Oct. 13 for driving above the speed limit. A trained drug-detection dog alerted, and a search turned up the 13 totes. Inside were about 187 vacuum-sealed packages of a white crystalline substance weighing roughly 307 kilograms, plus 13 brick-shaped packages weighing about 14 kilograms. Field tests on samples came back positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl, prosecutors said.
The Justice Department release describes Garcia Farias as being in the United States illegally. It does not say where the load came from, where it was headed, or whether anyone else is under investigation.
‘Seven million potentially lethal doses’
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah said the 14 kilograms of fentanyl alone represent about seven million potentially lethal two-milligram doses, and put the street value of the whole seizure at about $2 million. She said the volume reflects narcotics “flowing into our communities from transnational criminal organizations,” but the release does not tie this load to any specific cartel or group. Lincoln County Sheriff Derek Foremaster credited his deputies’ “proactive traffic enforcement and trained K-9 deployment.”

What he faces
Garcia Farias is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture and one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a methamphetamine mixture. Each count carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison if he is convicted. Homeland Security Investigations is leading the case with the sheriff’s office under the Homeland Security Task Force. A criminal complaint is only an allegation, and he is presumed innocent.
