Wanted in El Salvador Over at Least 15 Murders: Alleged Mara 18 Leader ‘El Cabra’ Arrested in Villahermosa, Tabasco — a Gang Born in Los Angeles

Mexican federal and state forces have arrested Óscar Ariel “N,” alias “El Cabra,” an alleged leader of the Mara 18 (Barrio 18) street gang who was a priority target for El Salvador, in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced on Oct. 12, 2026. El Universal and Milenio, citing Harfuch, reported that he faces an international arrest warrant over his alleged role in at least 15 homicides, plus sexual crimes and drug dealing.

What Mexican authorities say
A joint statement from Mexico’s Security Cabinet, published by the SSPC on Oct. 12, said the Navy, the Army, the National Guard, the SSPC and the Tabasco State Prosecutor’s Office carried out the arrest. It describes the detained man only as Oscar “N,” the leader of a criminal organization tied to homicides and drug dealing in El Salvador. It says a court in Santa Ana, El Salvador, issued a warrant for him on charges of illicit association and aggravated homicide.
Authorities said they seized doses of marijuana during the arrest. They read him his rights and handed him to prosecutors so that his handover to the authorities seeking him can be arranged. Harfuch thanked El Salvador’s government for sharing intelligence and Tabasco Gov. Javier May for his help. As of Monday, Aristegui Noticias reported, Harfuch had not said whether he would be deported or when he would be sent to El Salvador.
The latest Barrio 18 arrest in southern Mexico
Semanario Zeta noted that the arrest follows other 2026 captures of alleged Mara 18 figures wanted in Guatemala and El Salvador, mostly in Quintana Roo and Chiapas. Those include “Smoking” and “Liro Spyder,” escapees from Guatemala’s Fraijanes II prison, who were detained in Quintana Roo on Oct. 5. Zeta also recalled that the gang began in Los Angeles among young people of Mexican origin. It spread to Central America in part through the U.S. deportations of people with criminal records in the 1990s. Barrio 18 is the bitter rival of MS-13.
