Drug Dog Rini Sniffs Out 1.3 Tons of Meth and 10 Kilos of Fentanyl Hidden in Boxes at Tijuana Customs Export Lanes
A customs drug dog named Rini led Mexican inspectors to roughly 1,357 kilograms of methamphetamine and 10 kilograms of fentanyl hidden inside boxes of cargo in the export area of the Tijuana customs port, across from California, according to a joint statement issued September 18, 2026, by Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM) and the National Guard. No arrests were announced.
How the shipment was found
ANAM said its personnel, working with the National Guard, carried out an inspection in the export area of the Tijuana customs facility in Baja California. According to the agency’s statement, Rini, a canine trained to detect illicit substances, flagged merchandise concealed inside various boxes. Inspectors then carried out a detailed review of the load and located the drugs, ANAM said. The seizure totaled “approximately 1,357 kilos of methamphetamine and 10 kilos of fentanyl,” in the agency’s words — a haul La Razón de México summarized as about 1.3 tons.
What is still unknown
The official statement did not say who shipped the cargo, what legitimate merchandise it was packed with, or which criminal group, if any, was behind it. La Razón reported on September 19 that the communiqué did not specify the origin or destination of the shipment and did not report anyone detained. Infobae’s September 19 headline described the load as stopped “before crossing into the U.S.”; the export lanes handle cargo leaving Mexico, but ANAM itself did not state a destination. No cartel has been publicly linked to the shipment.
ANAM said the seized drugs were handed over to the relevant federal prosecutor’s office (Ministerio Público), which will continue the investigation. The agency framed the operation as part of routine inspection and surveillance at the country’s customs ports, saying the security cabinet agencies were reaffirming their commitment to “strengthen inter-institutional coordination” and prevent the trafficking of illicit substances.
