Gunman Kills Woman 7 Months Pregnant at Her Home in Los Mochis, Sinaloa; Her Baby Dies After an Emergency C-Section
A gunman shot and killed Fernanda, a 31-year-old woman about seven months pregnant, at her home in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, on the morning of Monday, Sept. 28, 2026. Her baby did not survive an emergency cesarean section, the Sinaloa newspaper Noroeste reported. The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. in the Ampliación 12 de Octubre neighborhood. Local activists are now demanding that it be investigated as a femicide.
What happened at Juan S. Millán and Higuera de Zaragoza
The early accounts differ on how the gunman reached her. In its first report on Sept. 28, Noroeste cited preliminary information that an armed man got her to open her door by posing as an employee of a state-owned agency. He then fired at point-blank range inside the house and fled. Noroeste’s follow-up that afternoon, and Los Noticieristas citing authorities, gave a different account. They said she had just parked a gray Nissan Altima and was getting out when a man walked up and shot her several times. The shooting happened at the corner of Juan S. Millán and Sindicatura Higuera de Zaragoza streets.
Her husband drove her in a private car to a hospital in downtown Los Mochis. Noroeste reported she had no vital signs on arrival. Doctors performed an emergency C-section to try to save the baby, who died minutes later. Noroeste identified the victim as Fernanda “G.” Other outlets used “N.”
Investigation and calls for justice
Ahome municipal police, the National Guard and forensic experts from the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office secured the area and collected shell casings, Noroeste reported. No arrest, suspect or motive had been announced as of Monday afternoon. No outlet has reported that any criminal group was involved.
Noticiero Altavoz reported that Los Mochis activist Erika Acosta called for the case to be solved and for the killer to face the maximum penalty. “Here there are two victims,” she said. The feminist collective Violetas Ingobernables has also asked that the case be classified as a femicide and that the family be protected.
Women killed in Sinaloa
According to Noroeste’s own count, 24 women had been killed in Sinaloa in September through Sept. 27, 22 of them in Mazatlán, Escuinapa and Culiacán. With Fernanda’s death, the newspaper counts 110 women killed violently in the state so far in 2026. Sinaloa has been hit by violence since the Sinaloa Cartel’s internal war began in September 2024. Over the weekend, two men were shot dead at a gathering in Culiacán.
