A community celebration in Paso Guayabo ended in a deadly attack, according to reports from Oaxaca. Three people were killed, including Amy Navarrete Arriola, a former Green Party candidate for mayor of Matías Romero.
The shooting was reported on September 8. By the next day, the story had moved beyond the celebration to a public tribute in Matías Romero, where participants called for justice, according to La Jornada.
The attack at the celebration

The outlet also reported that three injured women had been discharged, attributing that information to Oaxaca’s prosecutor’s office. The aftermath therefore included both the mourning described at the tribute and the situation of people who survived the attack.
The places in this sequence are distinct: the reported shooting occurred in Paso Guayabo, while the subsequent tribute took place in Matías Romero. One was the setting of the violence; the other was the setting of the public response described the following day.
The investigation remains the next part of the story
TV Azteca’s coverage reproduced a notice from Oaxaca’s prosecutor’s office announcing an investigation into the attack. That notice established that authorities were investigating; it did not resolve responsibility.
The reports cited here do not supply a court finding identifying who organized the attack or establishing a political motive. The fact that a former candidate was among the victims should not be turned into a claim that her political activity caused her death.
