187,725 Rounds and 11 Guns Hidden Beneath a Horse: Federal Agents Stop a Livestock Trailer Bound From Chihuahua to Jalisco
Mexican federal agents found 187,725 rounds of ammunition, 11 firearms and three magazines in a hidden compartment of a livestock trailer that was carrying a horse from Chihuahua, the border state south of Texas and New Mexico, toward Jalisco. The driver was arrested at a checkpoint in Aguascalientes, according to Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office (FGR), as reported by LJA.mx on Sept. 24, 2026, and Eje Central on Sept. 25.
The FGR said the ammunition and weapons were of various calibers and restricted to the exclusive use of Mexico’s armed forces.
A tip, a checkpoint and a driver who tried to get past it
According to the FGR statement reported by LJA.mx, the case began with an anonymous tip to federal prosecutors about possible illegal activity. Investigators then set up surveillance at checkpoints. Eje Central reported that the stop happened at the Peñuelas security gate in southern Aguascalientes.
Agents from the Federal Ministerial Police (PFM), working with the Defense Ministry, the National Guard and the federal Security Ministry (SSPC), signaled the driver of a pickup towing a cage-type cattle trailer to stop. The FGR said he ignored the order and tried to get around the checkpoint, but agents stopped and arrested him.
A door hidden under the straw
Forensic experts found that besides the horse, the trailer had a door concealed with straw, the FGR said. Eje Central reported that specialists found a false floor beneath the trailer bed, and that the cartridges, guns and magazines were hidden there. Blog del Narco also reported the seizure and said the ammunition was found under the space where the horse was riding.
What is not known
The FGR did not name the driver, say who the ammunition was meant for, or link the shipment to any cartel. Eje Central said federal authorities are still investigating where the weapons came from and where they were going. The driver was handed to the FGR’s Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR) in Aguascalientes. He has not been reported charged, and the FGR said he is presumed innocent unless a court convicts him.
