27 Kilos of Fentanyl and “$20,000 in One Night”: 17 Charged in San Diego Ring Whose Calls With Members in Mexico Were Wiretapped
Seventeen alleged members of a San Diego-based fentanyl trafficking organization have been charged in federal court, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a Sept. 24, 2026, release. According to ICE, the 10-month investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations seized more than 27 kilograms of fentanyl, and wiretaps picked up dozens of calls and texts between members of the group in the U.S. and in Mexico.
The Sept. 3 takedown
On Sept. 3, more than 200 federal, state and local officers carried out a coordinated takedown, arrested 13 defendants and served a search warrant in the city. Two other defendants had been arrested earlier that same week, and two remain fugitives, the release said.
Agents also seized more than 14.5 kilograms of cocaine, 0.6 kilograms of heroin, 0.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and $49,000 in cash during the case, ICE said. The release does not name a cartel.
How agents say the case unfolded
According to ICE, agents arrested Fabian Iniguez Ontiveros on Nov. 25 and seized 4.8 kilograms of fentanyl, 0.8 kilograms of meth and $10,042 in cash. A search of his phone revealed dozens of fentanyl sub-distributors working for the organization, the release said.
Investigators then identified Maricielo Ibarra Barrera as the new principal fentanyl distributor in the United States, ICE said, and undercover investigators made multiple fentanyl buys from the group in April and May 2026 that were allegedly delivered by her. Agents arrested her on Aug. 17 and reported finding about 1.7 kilograms of fentanyl, 0.6 kilograms of heroin and $15,568 in cash at her residence.
On Sept. 1, agents arrested Richard Alexander Arias Cruz and Juan Manuel Godinez and seized 14.52 kilograms of cocaine and 20.28 kilograms of fentanyl, according to the release.
Wiretaps and “$20,000 in one night”
ICE said federal wiretaps from June through August 2026 captured communications between members in the U.S. and Mexico that led directly to several fentanyl seizures. Drug ledgers showed the group routinely sold an ounce of fentanyl for $600 to $700 and sometimes made up to $20,000 in a single night of deliveries, the agency said.
“This investigation has been a massive, life-saving success, but we are not satisfied yet,” said HSI acting Executive Associate Director John Condon.
Charges are accusations, not proof of guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent.
